The Duet
The Duet is a piece I was inspired to write sometime in the late 1990s. It has no specific relevance to the overall theme and purpose of this website but is here just for sharing and enjoyment. It is an atypical perspective on longing for love and companionship. I hope you like it.
I know all the lovely words
To the music in your mind.
When the verses come to you,
It’s me that you will find.
Is your song one of loneliness?
Oh, I’ve sung that one myself.
So let’s write another tune,
And get our hearts back off the shelf.
I know all the lovely words
To the music in your heart.
And when we can be together,
The the harmony will start.
Are you tired of the long refrain
Of the silent telephone?
I’ve also heard that quiet tune,
And sat up nights alone.
And I know all the lovely words
To the music in your dreams.
Still they need your melody
To fill the voids between.
Your song says you need someone
Who knows just how you feel.
My lyrics tell of a love not found,
But one that’s warm and real.
I know all the lovely words
To the music of your soul.
And to hear them sung together
Is a joy we both must know.
Your music seeks my words of hope,
My lyrics need your tune.
And someday they’ll finally meet
Beneath the silver moon.
Then we’ll both know all the words
To the music in our hearts.
And our duet when heard by all
Will surely top the charts.
I know all the lovely words
To the music in your mind.
When the verses come to you,
It’s me that you will find.
